Whether you’re a resident of Guangzhou or you are a new visitor, you’ll probably want to do some Guangzhou shopping during your stay here. Guangzhou is a paradise for shopping with great resources, but where you should go depends on what you are going to buy. If you are simply in the mood of window shopping, Guangzhou is one of the best places to warm down your shopping therapy.
Where to go shopping in Guangzhou?
1. Beijing Lu Pedestrian Street 北京路步行街
The most well known shopping street is without doubt Beijing Lu located near Gongyuanqian metro station in the city center. Most of the stores here are focusing on clothes, shoes, accessories and electronics. Beijing Road is a high traffic area, drawing thousands of visitors per day, but there is no worry about heavy traffic since no vehicle is allowed on the pedestrian street. Many local shoppers also go to Beijing Road a lot so shopping here doesn’t have the “tourist” feel as with other places. However, stay away from those pushy street vendors trying hard to sell you cheap watches, cheap fragrances, etc. One neat thing about Beijing Lu is that there are remnants of the road when it was first constructed about 500 years ago. It is a nice little touch to have an artifact such as this juxtaposed with the neon-lit commercial street.
2. Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street 上下九步行街
Another place worth stopping by is Shangxiajiu pedestrian street, a short distance from Changshou Lu metro station (Line 1). Compared with Beijing lu, shangxiajiu is more of a traditional Chinese shopping area with some Chinese styled Tong lau. Also, the prices for the products on shangxiajiu lu are much lower but the quality is not as good as those on Beijing lu. Here you’ll see lots of sculptures on the street, representing life in Guangzhou during the 19th century, when the street was developed. Altogether there are over 200 stores on both sides of the road.
3. TEEMALL 天河城
If you are looking for something that are trendier and of higher quality, then Teemall near Tiyuxi Lu metro station is a second to none option. You can almost find anything in this immense shopping center, including a vast array of department stores, boutiques, electronics shops, restaurants and also, a five-star cinema on the top floor to entertain yourself after a hectic day. It boasts everything a fashion buyer wants to shop for, however, it is also quite expensive, and it is not the kind of place like Guangzhou Railway Station Markets area where you can bargain for a reasonable price.
