It is not the first time some foreign friends told me that they were charged 500 or 600 rmb when trying to take taxi from Guangzhou Baiyun Airport back to the hotel in the city center. The lucky thing is most are wise enough to make other alternatives than being ripped off by taxi drivers.
Usually the taxi fee has to be calculated according to the calculator in the front, however, some taxi drivers would charge exorbitant price if they see foreigners alone without any Chinese companion or at night when there are few taxies.
The real price for taking taxi from Guangzhou Baiyun Airport to the city center is under 100 RMB. 10 rmb for the first 2.5 km, and 2.6 rmb per extra kilo meter. The minimum fee for taking taxi is 10 rmb.
If you are charged at exorbitant price and can’t get a fair taxi, then it is better to make the following alternations.
1. The opening time for Line 3, Airport South metro station is from 6:10 am – 23:10 pm. If you are coming during this period, you can take metro directly to the metro station near the hotel.
2. Another alternative is to take Guangzhou airport express bus at first, get off at any stop, and take taxi.
