According to the sixth national census carried out in 2010, Guangdong province is the largest residential province for foreigners in China. The latest report on 28, August indicated that Africans scattered in Baiyun, Yuexiu, Hazhu and Panyu districts accounted for over half of Guangzhou’s foreign population. “Most of the residents living near Xiaobei Lu are from Africa,” said Jim, a shipping agent with a store in Tianxiu trade building. According to him, before most of the business owners in the building were Chinese but now the majority of shops and offices are run by Africans.

A recent report by a Japanese news website ZAKZAK has indicated that over 300,000 Africans are living illegally in Guangzhou, which has caused many crimes and conflictions with locals.

Back in the year 2007, Guangdong police caught more than 7,000 three-illegal foreigners and the figure almost doubled the next year. Africans accounted for the largest part of those foreigners. The latest report showed that the crime rate of foreigners has been rising with drug abuses accounting for about 60 percent. Over 300 Africans related to drug trafficking activities have been arrested since December 2012.

Most of the Africans here are involved in import and export business. Just take a stroll around Xiaobei, Keshan and Yaotai, you would come across many Africans walking around with goods.
